Simon is an extremely talented young musician currently studying violin, piano and voice at Birmingham University. Simon has studied the violin since the age of five and has participated in many regional festivals. He won the “most promising talent” award at the Flint Young Musician of the Year 2001. As a music scholar at Abbey Gate College Simon was involved in a wide range of musical and theatrical activities including the opportunity to sing in cathedrals throughout Britain and to Europe and the United States. Last fall Simon performed in the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall with the Crosby Symphony Orchestra. At Birmingham he plays with the Philharmonic and Chamber orchestras and sings with the University Singers.

Simon will perform the Saint-Saens Violin Concerto No. 3 in B minor with the Lakewood Symphony.

From Arvada, Melissa Graham will be preparing for her two week visit to Chester, England later this summer. Melissa was several times awarded the Outstanding Instrumental Music Student at Pomona High School. She also was chosen to perform in the Olympic Celebration Concert in Nagano, Japan. The winner of, and soloist in, the Mostly Strauss Orchestra Concerto Competition, she has also held the position of principal flute and piccolo for various honor bands. Upon graduation, she was awarded a scholarship from the Pomona Music Boosters and currently studies at the Lamont School of Music at the University of Denver.

Melissa will perform the Mozart Flute Concerto No. 2 in D major with the Lakewood Symphony.
* Also Watch for Melissa’s solo recital at the Lakewood Cultural Center later this spring!

The Lakewood/Chester, England, Sister Cities Music Scholar Exchange Program and Competition was established in 1986 to promote cultural exchanges between the counties. High school age students across the region compete for the chance to perform with the symphony and a two week, expense paid journey abroad to perform. While abroad, the students will be ambassadors and perform for community groups, visit schools, live with host families, and become part of the community for two weeks.

The program is supported by the City of Lakewood, Lakewood Sister Cities Program, Lakewood Symphony, Lakewood Rotary, Lakewood Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW), and Jefferson County Schools. For more information, please visit www.LakewoodSymphony.org.
